Common Kitchen Layouts

When it comes to kitchens, there are essentially only five "shapes."

U-SHAPED: In this relatively expansive kitchen layout, the cabinets and appliances fit along three walls. The "fourth wall" is actually an open space. This shape works best with the sink in the center of the "U" and the refrigerator at one end of the counter. This shape can make the kitchen feel more open. Many U-shaped kitchens include a kitchen island.

L-SHAPED: A very efficient use of space, this classic layout fits many homes perfectly. In the L-shaped kitchen, cabinets and appliances fit on two walls that meet at the corner. Many L-shaped kitchens also include a kitchen island.

CORRIDOR: Also called the galley, the corridor kitchen layout is best for a thin space. In this efficient layout, cabinets and appliances are placed on two facing walls. A corridor kitchen layout might include two different work areas, but it's helpful to have the sink and the stove on the same side.

OPEN PLAN: More open than even the U-shaped kitchen, the open plan layout enlarges the kitchen area to include other rooms, such as a family room, a dining area, or other spaces for relaxing or entertaining. This layout offers the opportunity for the most creativity. The only limit is the choice of kitchen space relative to the other rooms.

ONE-WALL: The most basic kitchen layout, the one-wall kitchen layout houses all cabinets and appliances on a single wall. This compact layout is also the least expensive.

The kitchen "work triangle" can be drawn by connecting the three basic work points of the kitchen: the sink, refrigerator, and stove.

Enterprise Home Remodeling's experienced kitchen layout designers follow time-tested guidelines to ensure efficiency, safety, and comfort in your home. We refer to these basic kitchen layout principles, and then plan exactly how much space you need for walkways, work aisles, seating, and countertops. We also anticipate minimum cabinet space depending on your kitchen size, appliance placement, ventilation, counter heights, work center configurations, and a host of other important considerations. For example, following basic guidelines for a smooth-functioning kitchen, we leave at least 8-inches of counter space on one side of the sink and 24-inches on the other side. We ensure that the dishwasher is positioned within three feet of the sink, and that all kitchens include at least three feet of countertop for food preparation.
