The choice of bathroom colors is intensely personal. The bathroom is our most private room, after all, and people often feel quite passionate about how different colors might influence their perception of the space. You want your bathroom colors to inspire comfort and relaxation; color should also instill a sense of beauty. Different colors can help you achieve these qualities in different ways.
White, the most common bathroom color, is simple and elegant. White also reveals dirt easily, which may make it easier to keep the bathroom looking spotless. White also reflects heat - on cold winter mornings, no color is colder than white.
Black is quite the opposite. Black hides most dirt, and absorbs heat. The problem with black, however, is that this bathroom color tends to make things appear smaller - and the bathroom is typically the smallest room in the house.
Green is a popular color that invigorates the body and eases the mind. Reminiscent of nature, a green or dark green bathroom color will inspire a sense of a flourishing forest.
Blue, the most popular bathroom color in the United States, is more deeply relaxing than even green. Using blue in the bathroom, in all its different shades, evokes tranquility. Blue evokes the sea and water, making it a potentially perfect match for a bathroom's decor.
If you wake early to shower, you may not want a relaxing bathroom color scheme. Many people feel they need a special jolt in the morning, and a derivative of red just might be perfect for this purpose. Red triggers excitement, increasing metabolism. Bright red may be a bit extreme for most bathrooms, but a soft variation might offer a slight boost of morning energy.
There are unlimited shades of each bathroom color, and each color affects each person in a subtly different manner. Mix, match, and experiment with color swatches before making any decisions.
A monochromatic color scheme can elicit a unified, peaceful, and harmonious feeling. While effectively unifying the space, varying shades, tones, and tints of the same color can also establish calm. But a lack of contrast might seem boring, and some might feel a lack of vitality in this space.
The analogous, or side-by-side, color scheme adds depth, energy, and visual appeal. Using two or three related colors - those next to each other on the color wheel - also offers versatility. The relationship of related colors can inspire harmony, but an analogous color scheme can also easily be spoiled by inadvertently adding a fourth color - so you want to be careful with your decorations and fixtures. Analogous color combinations of yellow, red, and orange, are full of life, and might heat a space; blue, teal, and green, on the other hand, visually cool a space.
Complimentary, opposite, or contrasting color combinations are those chosen from opposite sides of the color spectrum. A warm color combined with a cool color - such as yellow and purple, red and green, or blue and orange - creates intrigue. Theses color combinations are also visually pleasing to most people. Because two colors inevitably contain all three primary colors, a contrasting color scheme can be considered well-balanced.
